Your skin is your body’s largest organ—and it needs a little extra care, especially in summer. These tips come from the laya healthcare team, who are focused on delivering best-in-class clinical care for their 710,000 members—so you can trust you’re in good hands.
1. Be SunSmart
Use sunscreen daily – SPF 30+ for adults, SPF 50+ for kids. Choose broad-spectrum and water-resistant types. Reapply regularly.
Cover up – Wear long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses. UV rays can still reach your skin on cloudy days.
Got a minor sunburn or skin injury? The laya Health & Wellbeing Clinics treat minor burns and other urgent skin issues quickly—no long waits. Members (aged 12months+) can attend or book an appointment online for fast, expert care.
2. Avoid Sunbeds
Sunbeds emit UV rays much stronger than natural sunlight and increase your risk of skin damage and skin cancer.
3. Build Healthy Habits
Eat well – Plenty of fruits, vegetables and antioxidants help skin health.
Stay active – Exercise boosts circulation and skin oxygenation.
Drink water – Hydration supports your skin’s natural barrier.
4. Protect Your Skin Barrier
Moisturise daily, especially after washing.
Use gentle products – Mild, fragrance-free cleansers are best.
Be cautious with chemicals – Wear gloves when cleaning and moisturise after.
5. Know Your Skin
Check your skin monthly for:
New or changing moles
Red or scaly patches
Sores that won’t heal
If you spot anything unusual, speak to your GP or dermatologist.
6. Stay Safe at Work
If you work outdoors or around chemicals, you may be more at risk. Your employer should carry out risk assessments and provide protective gear and policies like the SunSmart Code.
7. Manage Stress
Stress can trigger skin issues. Try yoga, meditation or simple mindfulness to help keep skin (and mind) in balance.
Travelling Soon?
If you’re heading abroad, it’s good to know that many laya healthcare members are covered for in-patient hospital treatment in an emergency due to sudden illness or injury while travelling temporarily outside of Ireland.
Tip: Your overseas benefits depend on your scheme, so it’s worth laya members check cover before they go by logging in to their Member Area or chat with the laya customer care team.
Your skin protects you—so protect it back. These small steps can make a big difference. And remember, we're always here to help—at home or abroad.
